G'Day Mate

Mrs. Stickings and her family are off to Canberra, Australia for the year 2012.  My husband is participating in a teacher exchange program and we will live in their house and they will live in our house.  Canberra is the capital of Australia and has a population of 347,000 people.  The seasons are opposite so when we arrive on New Year's Eve Day it will be summer and 30 degrees!

Scholastic Book Fair

The book fair was a success and the library has lots of new books waiting for you to check them out. Thank you very much for supporting the fair and to the volunteers for their help each year. The winner of the draw for $25 worth of books for the teacher and student was Arielle Lyons in Mr. Daniels' class.  Congratulations.

Fall Author Visits Steve Vernon

Steve Vernon wowed the students from grades three, four, five and six with a lively presentation on writing and storytelling.  He involved students in various skits and they are asking for his books in the library.  Steve lives in Halifax and visited Uniacke District School as part of the Writers in the Schools program through The Writers Federation of Nova Scotia.

Fall Author Visits Judy Dudar

Judy Dudar, author of I Spy a Bunny, read to grade primary, one and two in the library in October. The students enjoyed the story, looking at the illustrations and making up stories about the rocks that Judy found on the beach at White Point.  Judy lives in Halifax and visited Uniacke District School through the Writers in the Schools Program part of the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia.

Student Book Reviews

TITLE: STAR WARS CHARACTER ENCYCLOPEDIA.
AUTHOR: SIMON BEECROFT.

I recommend this book to the people who want to learn all of the characters in STAR WARS. I also recommend this book to those who would like to learn more about the characters. Each page has a data file for the character mentioned. The data file tells the reader when they appear in the movies and/or the Clone Wars series. The illustrations are realistic-looking. Each page gives a detailed picture of the character. It gives a description of the characters' features and two pictures from the movies that they show up in. This book is easy to read. I give it a 10 out of 10 rating.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the Uniacke District School Library for the new school year. The library now has a blog which will tell you what is happening at the school library.  The library is open on Day One, Three and Five of the six day cycle. Elementary students come to the library once each cycle and sign out a book and the junior high students also come each cycle but may frequent the library more often.  Junior high students are welcome to use the library at their lunch hour.  Mrs. Stickings is looking forward to showing you the new books that are coming to the library in September.
